Introduction

I was given the choice of three outcomes for this module: an extract from a script, a treatment for a documentary or a series of 9-12 images. From previous experience, I knew that script writing was not my forte and I felt that with the image series, I would come out with a tangible piece of work for my portfolio after university. The idea of filming only a treatment for a documentary seemed quite unfinished to me. I would also have to design an exhibition space for my images on sketch up.

When originally given the task of creating 9-12 images, I didn't know what to focus on as there was no specific topic and the guidelines were incredibly open. Originally, I had been working digitally with the canon 6D and had the idea to take photos of people on various forms of public transport in europe, acting as the vouyeur and trying to undertstand how people on public transport reflects the city they live in. As I started off this project, I ran into a number of problems including people not wanting to be photographed as well as each frame being completely different, which wouldn't work well within a series. Travel is something I've always been interested in as there are so many different reasons for destinations. When I was younger, I would try and concoct different stories for everyone's journeys and this is definitely a topic that I'd love to explore more, possibly in third year for my end of year project. I had begun designing a space for these images on sketch up, which was quite conceptual in that it was a room with the same dimensions as a tube, decorated in the same way and placed beside Camden Town tube station. Below are some examples:

Then I began asking myself what defines a 'series' of images and found this definition:

I began playing with the idea of using a technique as a series rather than focussing solely on the subject matter. The reason being that I wanted to develop my expertise and skillset as a photographer  so that when the time came to encode semiotics, I would be able to do so with more accuracy, as
