Finding a location and planning the project
I had originally planned to shoot this project in my home town of Belfast, in iconic spots such as The Giant's Causeway. However, given the time restraints and nature of the project, I though somewhere closer to my current place of residence would be best. I walk through Hyde Park in Leeds around 4 times a day and I'm never really taking in met surroundings and more or less just tale it for granted. However, having my dad and dog over and walking through the park was quite a surreal experience as that's normally where I see my university friends or commute each day. My dad grew up in Leeds and used to walk through this park as well and was able to recount stories to me of him and his friends meeting up in the park when they were young mods. It was this joining of two different points in time to make a bond through a photograph that struck a chord with both of us. My dad was able to relive parts of his childhood and adolescence through me.
A schedule wasn't needed as I just needed my dog and my dad and camera, my dad lives in Harrogate (30 mins away) so this wasn't a problem. I did have to plan against the weather conditions as I needed a highly bright, sunny day past 12 o clock to ensure maximum contrast on the polaroids. The reason for this is that I was keeping in mind that I would be emulsion lifting and therefore, knew I needed to have bright highlights opposed to dark shadows. I tried to find spots that were shaded, for example, with the 'Long Line Leaves' image as the image then becomes slightly more abstract also.
